Nature, Lakes, the sea, Archeological Sites

Thanks to a succession of protected areas –“ parchi naturali “ – anyone who wishes to hike from the northern tip of Tuscany – the Maremma – to the southern outskirts of Rome, can do so almost without encountering any other human beings along the wayThis green territory is so vast that it covers well over two-thirds of what is approximately Northern Lazio. The sheer unspoiled beauty of this region, containing the most diverse fauna and flora makes this ancient land quite exceptional:

If a pink Flamingo migrating to the South, taking refuge for a few months in the Saline Riserva Naturale of Tarquinia, it could sail above long golden beaches and dunes, flowering hills and evergreen forests, mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, wild gorges, and landscapes shaped by volcanos. On its journey it might spot wild horses and donkeys, the white Maremma cows with their long, lyre shaped horns, sheep, wolves, wild boars and an endless variety of reptiles and birds. With some luck, it will observe dolphins playing in the crystalline waters of the enormous protected marine park that extends to the island of Gianutri and Giglio.

Back on Terra Firma, these national parks host some of the most ancient and important vestiges of the Etruscan Civilization – World Heritage UNESCO sites – with elaborate painted tombs, amphitheaters, and the remnants of ports and museums dedicated to many remarkable finds.
