Thermal hot springs and baths are a very special feature of the volcanic nature of Etruria. Their medical and healing qualities have been known since antiquity. Some are in picturesque settings, include hot and cold pools, in which you can relax on clear nights under a star-filled sky.
In Roman times, thermal baths were especially popular and formalized into functional architectural structures whose remnants one can still find today.
Later Dante Alighieri made special mentions in his Divina Commedia of the Bullicame located not very far from Viterbo.
The beneficial medical qualities of the Terme were also appreciated by the Popes, restructuring the ancient bath for their needs, when they would stay for extended sojourns.
